We discovered this one-of-a-kind textile at a vintage huipil market in the Guatemalan Highlands. Every Tuesday and Thursday, locals from the lakeside town of Panajachel form a pop-up bazaar in a fire station parking lot on Calle Principal. Some sellers travel from surrounding Lake Atitlan villages, arriving first thing in the morning to unload truckbeds stacked high with second-hand huipilescortasbufandas, and trajes. There’s only a handful of individual “stalls” – and it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins, with thousands of colorful textiles stacked in massive piles and unfurled on every inch of hot concrete in sight, fusing into one giant carpet. Vendors call out to anyone who pauses outside their makeshift tarp stalls, inviting them to slip off their shoes and walk across the patchwork maze of aged fabrics.
